Essex social services obtained a High Court order against the woman that allowed her to be forcibly sedated and her child to be taken from her womb.
The council said it was acting in the best interests of the woman, an Italian who was in Britain on a work trip, because she had suffered a mental breakdown.
If you are not absolutely terrified and outraged by this you are wrong. The precedent this sets put every person on earth in danger.
oh my god read the article this is FUCKING HORRIFIC. she got back on her bipolar disorder medication and is in recovery but they won’t give her her child back “because of the risk she might relapse”. What you’re fucking saying with that is that mentally ill people shouldn’t even be allowed children even if they’re safe and well *just in case*, that we’re a permanent threat to ourselves and others even when we’re in treatment and recovery and living a stable life. I am FUCKING LIVID
Over a fucking panic attack. I’m fucking serious, all of this over a single panic attack. They took her baby in the most horrific way possible because she had a fucking panic attack.
From the Article:
She suffered a panic attack, which her relations believe was due to her failure to take regular medication for an existing bipolar condition.
It’s worth noting, that it’s very common for people on psychiatric medication to go off of their meds if they become pregnant, because of risk of side effects.
I bolded the above. I wanted there to be no one to think that she was being irresponsible for not haven taken her meds regularly. She did it for good reason, for the health of her own baby. And she got punished for it.
i fucking cant
So she did what was best for her kid, has ONE SINGLE PANIC ATTACK WHICH IS A THING THAT CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE WHETHER THEY HAVE A MENTAL ILLNESS OR NOT and decide that they can literally violate her body in a horrific manner and take her kid away. But she’s the dangerous one.
Terribly sad. I hope this gets worked out in her benefit.
I can’t even imagine how terrifyingly awful that situation had to have been. Forcing a woman, against her will, to undergo sedation and then waking up in pain, without the fetus you’ve been carrying for 9 months? That’s beyond the pale. How much do the rights of an unborn fetus circumvent the rights of a full-grown adult? How much do we have to other the mentally ill, treating them (us) as less than human? She was literally treated like a breeding animal, with no cause of concern for her safety, mental health or well-being. Fuck. Fuck.
This is literally the stuff that horror movies are made of.
When K was relating this story to me, I couldn’t believe it until I read the article for myself. Have we really gotten to the point that a woman who, even just from the stress of being pregnant, has a panic attack can legally have her baby ripped out of her body and be thrown into a mental institution? Did we slip back into the 19th century, because I don’t recall any horse-drawn buggies going by outside.
This is why we need mental health reform. This is why we need women’s rights. This is why we need to treat fellow humans like fucking humans, not livestock to be cast aside when they seem a little “off.”
1. HORMONES MAKE TEAR PRODUCTION HARDER FOR MEN, EASIER FOR WOMEN.
Think men don’t cry as often because they’re “strong” or lack emotion? Well, you can’t cry if you don’t have the tears to do it. Before puberty, girls and boys cry in equal amounts, and for pretty much the exact same reasons. When puberty hits and we get our hormones on (testosterone for the fellas and prolactin for ladies), our ability to PRODUCE tears changes. Testosterone may inhibit tear production in men, while prolactin actually makes crying easier (and encourages it) for women. Though the experience of feeling emotion may be exactly the same between the sexes, men’s bodies are simply less likely to produce tears as a response (while women’s bodies may produce them automatically, especially in response to stress). This hormonal difference also means that in situations where men & women BEGIN to cry, men may be able to shut down the reflex more easily, whereas women may have a much harder time holding them back. Women with especially high prolactin levels (preggers, post-preggers, hormonally imbalance like me, etc) may find they can cry almost indefinitely when emotions run high. I call it “leaking”, lol. In general, women are QUEENS of the “good, long cry”. Women may produce more tears than normal when depressed/anxious because of higher levels of tear producing stress hormone.
For men trying to understand a female cry response, it’s kind of like a boner for your eyeballs: sometimes it happens for no reason and you can’t shut it off right away EVEN when you desperately wanna. That’s not to say women are emotionally irrational or somehow unable to function when crying: we just have a physical response to emotion that makes us more likely to express it with tears. Tears (or lack of tears) are also NOT an indicator of depth of feeling or lack of emotion: a man can be devastated and simply be unable to produce tears (or will produce just a few). A woman can be mildly upset or stressed and cry whole heartedly.
Huh. That explains some things.
Reblogging to add more sources: Is it true that women’s tears contain an enzyme that can be released only by crying, meaning they are quicker to cry under emotional stress?
Speaking as a transman who has started testosterone, this is absolutely true. I would start crying much more easily pre-t and now it’s damnably hard to start, especially in situations where I just want a good cry like I used to.
I’m sorry, I just can’t get over the phrase “boners for your eyeballs.”
Well fucking shit, no wonder I can’t cry anymore. I hate not being able to, it was so useful and cathartic.
Well, that explains a bit, lord knows I’ve felt urges to cry but it just never happened. I assumed I was broken or unaffected or something.
I was not not aware of that.
As someone who cries really easily and who has been dismissed as “irrational” and generally unable to think clearly or know what I’m talking about while I’m crying, this is important.
So other than the 100% ciscentric wording, that’s really interesting.(via bookishbutcorruptible)
I am expecting a lot of notes
If not I will cry. I don’t wanna cry guys!
For the first time, the Amazonian Princess, Diana of Themyscira, is appearing on the big screen. Man of Steel director Zack Snyder and writer David S. Goyer are bringing Wonder Woman to life alongside Superman and Batman in their up-coming Man of Steel sequel.
Warner Bros. announced today that the part will be portrayed by Israeli actress Gal Gadot who is best known as Giselle Harabo in the Fast and The Furious 5 and 6 movies.
"Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favorite in the DC Universe. Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role. We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character," Snyder said.
The Man of Steel sequel is set to be released on the 17th of July, 2015. [x]
This is the only news about this movie so far that I feel good about…but I feel REALLY GOOD about it
Whelp. I guess I’ll be watching this movie now.
I cannot imagine this going well because I am a terrible cynic sometimes, but here’s hoping for the best.
“kill myself” was the most common answer when they contemplated the possibility of life as a girl
Yeah, tell me again how misogyny “isn’t real” and men and boys actually “love”, “like” and “respect the female sex”? This is how deep misogynistic propaganda runs in this world. Men and boys are so viscerally contemptuous of anything or anyone who/that is female or feminine, or perceived to be female or feminine, that they would rather commit suicide than to be associated with— or become a member of— the female sex. As Germaine Greer said, “women have no idea how much men hate them.”
they would rather die then be treated how they treat us

lucifer and michael are…???
oh shit you may have a point
this was my first thought when he said that
I actually don’t think that Lucifer and Michael have been freed. The cage is in Hell, and it was Heaven that was locked down. The two are separate.
There needs to be a bar or club or something that when you walk in there’s a rack of different color wristbands with words like “I looking for-“
- no one
So that everyone would know who’s looking for who.
"Hey that girl is cute. And her wristband says she’s also looking for a girl. Sweet!”
"He’s cute, but his wristband says girls. Oh well."
you are the future
No, no, with all sincerity and due respect, in my opinion you did not “fix it.” All love and power toward the *intention,* which I imagine was to convey that Holmes and Watson were meant to be together (which is completely true), but Mary Morstan’s existence does not diminish in any way the real, canonical regard Sherlock Holmes and John Watson felt for each other. They would each take a bullet for the other, they were lifelong partners, and John Watson married Mary Morstan, who was a complete and total badass. Other reasons this is not “fixed” include:
—You’re literally erasing a woman of great intelligence and gentility, one whom BOTH Holmes and Watson respected and admired.
—You have not even see the episode yet (I am making an assumption there, but it’s a good one, and…).
—If you’ve read The Sign of Four, and maybe you have, Holmes says of Mary, “I think she is one of the most charming young ladies I ever met and might have been most useful in such work as we have been doing. She had a decided genius that way; witness the way in which she preserved that Agra plan from all the other papers of her father.” That’s the character you’re erasing.
—There is nothing wrong with shipping Johnlock. There is something decidedly unfortunate in needing to delete a strong female character in order to do it, however, and one taken straight from the original books.
—It honestly lessens the regard Holmes and Watson had for each other to assume that Mary might ruin anything whatsoever. What other wife would say “sure thing” every time John Watson abandons ship and takes off with Holmes for days at a time? Did Kelly Reilly ruin the WB films? No, she did not, and I am tired of this nonsense.
Rant over, thank you.
I get deeply annoyed when people aggrandize Mary Morstan as some kind of feminist heroine, but she was an intelligent, understanding woman and the last thing anyone needs is for those kinds of female characters to be erased and vilified.
I don’t advocate for anyone overstating her role in the canon to the point of making her pivotal (because, try as anyone may to prove otherwise, she was essentially a filler plot point and was removed once she’d served a purpose), but we don’t know how she is going to be portrayed in this series. Keep her, leave room for character development and for her contribution to the Sherlock/John dynamic to become apparent.
I can understand when people aren’t jazzed about Mary. I’m not her biggest fan. However, she has potential here and let’s not diminish that.
When people hate on Mary
When people send Amanda death threats
When people are just fucking idiots…
Are we really doing this again? Really…
I am disappointed in everyone that has been doing it, you cruel, cruel people.
